Andy Ledger FBI Special Agent knew all
about this lonely section of the U.S. and Mexican border. He was no more than
100 feet away from the brass boundary market at the border and he was scanning
for illegal aliens when his radio barked and crackled.
The Customs and Border Patrol Agent
gave Andy Ledger a dirty look as the radio was too loud as the agent squatted
behind a dried out desert bush trying his best to hide.
The agent was also scanning the border
area with high powered military grade glasses but the silent vigil was broken
by the radio noise that seemed to get louder in this lonely part of the New
Mexican desert.
The tip received said the smuggler
would be taking a few dozen illegal aliens across the U.S. border tonight so Andy
and his Border Patrol Agent had been observing for several hours, nothing.
They watched and waited but the radio
sound disturbed their silent night as Andy got up on one knee and talked into
his hand held device.
Before a word could be spoken Andy and
the Patrol Agent heard the rifle shot as the bullet came purring too close to
call. Cautiously they both took cover
behind a good sized crop of rocks as more rifle shots were heard and bullets
started to bounce around them.
Andy was talking on the radio
informing central command that they were under fire as the bullets become
louder and closer.
The Border Patrol Agent had pulled his
pistol out and was waiting for something to shoot at as he simply pointed his
pistol toward the darkness.
Central Command advised Andy Ledger
that electronic sensors had picked up movement one hundred yards to their south
and the group was approaching the border.
Central had tried by radio to warn Andy but the shots and the words
arrived at the same time.
Andy advised Central that they were
taking fire from the South and he could see graceful arcs of lights searching
for their position. The smugglers were
sitting on top of a hill on the Mexico side and their powerful lights were
moving around looking for targets.
Andy saw a rifle flash to his right
and the bullet hit the cactus only a couple of feet away. Quickly they both moved and despite their
efforts at hiding the Mexicans kept searching with their lights and fired
several rifle shots. The smugglers
received tens of thousands of dollars to move the illegal aliens across the
border but even more moving narcotics in small boxes inside back packs.
