Ray D. George, the 31-year-old son of Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson, was arrested as the suspect in an alleged rape attempt in Lower Paxton Twp. early Sunday, Thompson confirmed via spokeswoman Joyce Davis in a news release late Sunday night.
"The mayor expresses her love and concern for her son," the news release said. "She acknowledges the seriousness of the charges and recognizes that the matter is now in the judicial process. Mayor Thompson asks for the community's prayers for her and for her family."
Share Mayor Thompson referred questions to George's attorney Royce Morris, who was unavailable for comment Sunday night.
Police said George, who they said was an acquaintance of the woman, allegedly tried to rape her. Police said she fought him off and he fled the apartment. The woman called 911 at 2:15 a.m. from a pay phone at a convenience store, police said. The woman told police that George ripped her phone out of the wall and broke her cell phone.
George, 31, of the 3100 block of Union Deposit Road in Susquehanna Twp,, was arrested at noon Sunday and charged with criminal attempt rape, indecent assault, simple assault and criminal mischief, police said. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Kenneth Lenker and released after posting $10,000 bail.
The woman suffered scratches and bruises but did not go to the hospital, police said.
